TMS Q & A
What is TMS?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive treatment that can improve your depression. During treatments, your practitioner places an electromagnetic coil on a specific region on the side of your head, right against your scalp.
The system sends precisely targeted electromagnetic pulses deep into your brain tissue, which stimulate nerve cells involved in mood control and depression. In this way nerve cells involved in mood are re-activated. Researchers also find that TMS can activate regions of your brain that have limited functionality or activity due to depression, stress, or trauma. TMS has been FDA approved for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder in adult patients who have failed to improve with antidepressant medications in the past.
It has been noted that TMS is often beneficial for depression sufferers who haven’t had success with medications or other types of treatments such as psychotherapy, which occurs up to 60% of the time. If you’ve been suffering from depression and have tried multiple medications as well as therapy with limited or no improvement in symptoms you may be a candidate for TMS.
How many TMS treatments do I need?
Because TMS is entirely noninvasive and takes just 20 minutes per session, you can safely and efficiently have several treatments. Sessions are conducted 5 days per week Monday-Friday for approximately 6 weeks. Benefits can be noticed as early as 2-3 weeks by many patients.
Since TMS treatments are quick, you can easily schedule sessions during your lunch break, or on your way home from work.
Once TMS starts working for you, your depression can either improve or resolve completely. It can take several weeks of treatment to start experiencing the benefits of TMS. During this time, Dr. Sidhu and her team will continue to monitor you to ensure you’re getting the care you need.
Many health insurance policies do cover TMS treatment. Dr. Sidhu will verify your coverage before treatment begins.
