Put Your Depression in Remission This New Year with TMS Therapy
Depression can take over your life, especially when you don’t feel better after trying several antidepressants or several rounds of therapy.
You’re not alone in your struggles. About 30% of people with depression are treatment-resistant. However, there’s hope with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy.
At Reviv Functional Psychiatry & TMS Wellness Center in Fullerton, California, our skilled psychiatrist, Dr. Hina Sidhu, understands the effects of depression and offers innovative treatments like TMS therapy.
Read on to learn how TMS therapy can put your depression in remission and help you feel better.
About TMS therapy
TMS therapy is unlike any other type of psychiatric treatment. It doesn’t involve talking, medication, or surgery. Instead, it uses repetitive pulses of magnetic energy to stimulate electrical activity in brain cells and nerves, increasing their function.
During therapy, you wear a special coil hat that creates a magnetic field around your skull. We adjust the strength and pulse rate of the magnetic field to activate your brain cells and nerves to get the desired results.
You may hear a clicking sound during treatment. However, there is no pain. That said, minor headaches are a common side effect after treatment.
How TMS therapy lifts depression
We use TMS therapy to activate the areas of the brain that regulate mood. Researchers theorize that depression affects these areas, decreasing normal activity and causing low mood and energy. Like muscle, continued disuse makes it more challenging to reconnect, prolonging symptoms.
TMS therapy awakens the brain cells and nerves in the brain. Then, they interact and make neural connections, lifting the veil of sadness and despair. It works best when combined with talk therapy and antidepressants, helping to positively shape the new neural connections.
Studies show that TMS therapy can put treatment-resistant depression (TRD) into remission.
Can TMS therapy help you?
If talk therapy and medication aren’t helping improve your mood, then you may benefit from TMS therapy. While TMS therapy is effective, it’s not the right treatment for everyone. We conduct thorough consultations to determine the best treatment for each patient.
For depression, we start with talk therapy and antidepressants, and when they don’t work, we move forward with other treatments, such as TMS.
TMS therapy is noninvasive, so you can drive yourself home after. However, you need to commit to three to five 30-minute sessions a week for six weeks.
The results aren’t immediate, but you may notice improvements in mood within a couple of weeks. Most people experience lasting results.
